I read our story to my 10 year old and the reaction
was... well... telling. Her only comment was that it wasn't funny. The
only point where she laughed out loud was after Norbert tried to take a
bite out of the woodsprites and they responded by flying around them and
singing at a safe distance. (I wrote that part so my reading may have
influenced her response.) My defense of the humor of Hagrid's idea of
a light dessert got only a "hmmm."

We've spent a lot of time discussing what it is about Harry Potter that
makes the books so lovable. Consider the possibility that its because they
are funny. Or perhaps more precisely, Ms. Rowling has a special knack for
getitng the mix of humor and adventure just right. The closest analogy
to Harry Potter that I've come up with, and I admit it isn't a very good
one, is Tom Sawyer. Mark Twain certainly mixed his adventure with humor.

Maybe the humor is a crucial element.
