he may be another unregistered animagus who is in hiding, like Sirius.

There are a ton of stories on www.fanfiction.net about Crookshanks being
another unregisitered Animagus. At least one has him not knowing how to
turn back to human and seeking out Sirius for that info. HOWEVER, then
why hasn't anyone noticed on the Marauders' Map that it says Firstname
Lastname instead of 'Crookshanks'?
