In Book 1, Harry and Seamus are paired up in Flitwick's Charms lesson
(Ch. "Halloween"). Seamus sets light to a feather he is trying to
levitate and "Harry had to put it out with his hat". This suggests that
the students wear pointed hats in class.
There's also a reference to Snape swishing around in his cloak, making
him sound like Count Dracula.
I guess I'll have to adjust my mental images...
