I have a theory that Snape's attitude toward Neville is because of his
parents. Perhaps, for example, Snape new about the planned attack on
Neville's parents, but was unable to prevent it. If he *had* prevented it,
Neville would certainly have had a better life, and may not even be the
near-squib we know. I can picture Snape feeling a bit guilty over this,
and I can easily imagine Snape loathing the fact that he feels guilty
and taking it out on Neville.
