If you feel like counting The Hobbit, then one could make the case for
Tolkien's 3 (4) book series being just such an example. The Hobbit is
generally easier reading, less dark and dreadful and more suited for
younger children. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is definitely something
they would graduate to when they get older.
Then again, I read them all when I was 11. So much for that theory. :-)
