Trust me, I thought of that, and started cracking up laughing at this
line in the book!

Maybe that's a modification of the shrinking keys Mr. Weasley mentioned
in CoS (which shrink to nothing when a muggle is looking for them). These
might be shrinking, moving, and regrowing keys.
