JKR is doing a superb job of showing her readers the complexities of
real life. We have Cornelius Fudge, a pleasant old codger who is doing
evil's work because he won't step up to his duty because he just wants
to enjoy his cushy job; and Snape, a genuinely nasty so-and-so who has
served against Voldemort 'at great peril to his life' and is about to
do it again.

Hermione keeping Rita in a jar is karmic revenge, and it's made clear
Rita's going to be let go; besides, it's not evil treatment for a beetle,
is it? As for Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle, they've suffered no lasting harm,
and they just deserve it so much it's hard to lose any sleep over them.
