Becuase he kept Buckbeak with him, probably because he believed that
Bb would be useful at some point, and travelled by means of *him* -
because he couldn;t take Buckbeak apparating ("Between") with him,
Buckbeak being a hippogriff and not a Pernese dragon. ("I hate little
fire lizards and my dragon hates them too" - Julia Ecklar).
