I have always got the impression that James acted to keep Sirius in
check and make sure he didn't do anything that was too stupid.

Someone said earlier that was James was a Quidditch Hero, Head Boy,
got good marks...

He sounds too perfect to be true. Good at everything, no wonder he found
a few enemies.
