If it's still in print, you ought to look up "Murder and Magic" and the
other Lord Darcy novels by Randall Garrett. They're alternate universe
mysteries, in a universe where the Laws of Magic were discovered before
the Renaissance, the Plantagenets still rule the Angevin (England/France)
Empire, and the Church reformed itself from within and is the body that
regulates the practice of magic. Magic is science here, and the "Khemic
Arts" are an oddity. I keep thinking of these books reading Harry.
