I think it's because he really didn't have anything to escape *for*
until he saw the picture of Scabbers in the Daily Prophet.

Yeah...if he'd escaped, who would have believed he was innocent, with
the only one who could tell the truth supposedly dead. Once he knew
Pettigrew was alive there was hope for him.
