The game would have three teams and two areas. There would be two regular quidditch teams staying inside a fixed game area. The third team of everyone else must stay outside the game area. You give the "outsiders" the Golden Snitch (a tennis ball) and tell them to play "keep away" from the seekers while throwing the ball over or through the game area. If they succeed in keeping the tennis ball away from the seekers for the duration of the game, they win. Mystril -- I read that article by Henser -- the author seems a very grumpy individual! I never read fantasy fiction as a kid, so I can't honestly judge the HP books against the books he cites in his article. Can anyone else comment? I do think he's wrong on two points. I would heartily disagree that adults should not be reading these books (an infantilization of our culture I think he said). And, I disagree with his assertion that the HP books will not be classics. I think they will stand the test of time quite well. He also made an interesting point about how once the last book is released, future children readers won't age with Harry and his gang (i.e., they'll read them one after another and the 8-yr old reader who loves Book 1 will be very confused by the 17 yr-old Harry in Book 7). I would point Mr. Henser to the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. There were 7 of those also, and many people (myself included) consider them to be the best American children's lit ever written. I threw the American bit in, as I may now believe HP to be the best British children's lit ever written. <g> I'm looking forward to the discussions! I think Wizard of Earthsea is more aimed at older kids, at least teenagers. Even though the character is young, the books are very dark. I read them in college. I only like parts of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because I stop reading when he gets too nasty. I read whatever children's fantasy I could find when I was a kid, some of it was good, some of it was awful. Harry Potter is better than most of the stuff that's out there, but it isn't as good as the best of it. I agree that Harry Potter will eventually be considered a classic series and all adults may not read it, but the ones that do pick it up will appreciate it. It seems that whenever something hits a certain level of popularity, people come swarming out to say how horrible it is. It doesn't happen as often with books as it does with films or television shows or toys. Usually they are semi-accurate, but when writers start criticizing their readers for reading kids books, it seems to be getting ridiculous. If I were a regular reader of that author's column, I might write a letter, saying that HP is more interesting than his columns and I will henceforth stop reading his columns to devote more of my time to children's literature. But I'm not, so I won't. Since we're waiting impatiently (I am, at least) for the next installment in our Harry Potter series, I've been forced to read (gasp!) other books. Today I picked up something called "Visitors From Oz". It's a retelling of the story by a man named Martin Gardner, one of America's greatest Oz experts (the dust jacket's description, not mine - I don't know yet). It's placed in Modern day New York City where Dorothy and her friends are pursued by hoodlums. It sounds like it's right up our alley. Once I'm finished, I'll post my review. I don't think people would buy toys based on a book (I don't know, can anyone with kids answer?), and if the movie flops (which it proably won't), there will be Harry dolls overflowing in the bargain bins. If I were a kid, I think I would prefer to make my own toys -- paint a ping pong ball gold and attach wings to it...steal my mother's broomstick...mix up a few jelly beans for every flavor beans....etc. But I guess some kids are used to having everything provided for them, so they are going to want little HP dolls and plastic broomsticks with lightning bolts on them. I guess I sympathize, I always loved Willie Wonka candy because I thought it was cool that they invented a candy brand based on the book... I have to admit, since I don't like dealing with chocolate, I'm looking forward to buying Chocolate Frogs. *sheepish grin* -mystril From suvwi at yahoo.com Fri Feb 11 15:27:00 2000 From: suvwi at yahoo.com (suvwi at yahoo.com) Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 10:27:00 -0500 Subject: I suppose it had to happen Message-ID: Original Yahoo! Yes they will want toys based on the book. There are lots of toys based on books out there. Mostly for sale at bookstores and educational toystores but they sell. My oldest has made some of his own toys, he was Harry Potter for Halloween. But he would love a computer game based on the book. And I know the littler ones would love a stuffed doll. I don't think it is a matter of having everything provided for them, I know mine use their imaginations most of the time. But they enjoy having toys of their favorite things, whether it is from a movie, book or just general type toys like cars. And even were he to ACT the awkwardness, his natural sophistication would shine through. And that's why I believe they should go with an unknown, normal kid in the part. I think the reason that we all love Harry so much is because he IS just the tiniest bit gawky - he reminds us how difficult it was to be a kid. Date: 2/15/00 6:35 pm (ET) I agree with VoiceLady -- the casting should be for a less sophisticated actor. Certainly we could do worse than Osmont, but I'd rather see them cast: a British kid (preferably unknown), who has black hair, green eyes and otherwise meets the physical description and meets the less obvious description (i.e. a little awkward and sensitive as Voicelady said). They wouldn't have to try so hard to match the physical attributes of all the other characters, but they should *really* try hard to get a great Harry cast for the main role. Although, it'd sure be nice if Ron, Herminone, Hagrid and Dumbledore looked something like they are described in the books. Perhaps I've missed it and I just need to re-read, but do we ever see Harry *giving* presents to others?? We see him receiving Christmas and birthday gifts from Hermione and Ron (and Hagrid of course) over the years, but I don't recall Harry giving any gifts. Strange question, but I thought it might spark some discussion of the finer points. :--) Rowling has apparently said that someone will turn on Harry in the later books. Does anyone else wonder if it *could* be Ron?? Ron has always been so envious of material things that others have, and I can't help but wonder if he might be seduced by money or material items to betray Harry at some point. I think it would be unwittingly as I can't imagine how the plot could develop over the next 3-4 books such that it would be believable that Ron would knowingly betray his best friend (I guess I'm saying I don't forsee any big changes to their friendship). The other logical guess for someone who might betray him (in my mind) is Neville. Harry has always been so kind to him, but he seems like he might have the capacity to be a turncoat. Well, just trying to get some discussion going . ... Working from parallels has all manner of problems but Rowling does seem to be developing them here. Harry's father had two extremely close friends: Sirius and Lupin. Harry has two extremely close friends: Ron and Herminone. Harry's father had one tag along, weak ineffectual friend: Peter Pettigrew. Harry's is Neville. Harry's father had a fellow student who hated him and who was a Slytherin: Snape. Harry has a fellow student who hates him and is a Slytherin: Malfoy. He who must not be named killed Harry's father and has been trying ever since to kill Harry. Pushing this to the limit I see a final scene this way. Harry's father faced Voldemort alone without his friends at his side and died. Harry won't repeat the mistake and will have Ron and Hermione with him when the final confrontation comes. Instead of simply defeating Voldemort, as Harry has done twice now, Harry, Ron and Herminone together will utterly destroy him. There may be doubt about whether they have actually done it or not and we may lose one of them at the time. That's my guess. If you look at the transcript to Jo's last online interview at the scholastic website she does sort of mention that Ron is very sensitive to his income status. Now as to Neville being a turn coat. I would hope that the similarties between Harry and co. and James and co. (w/c skimmel mentioned) are just similarities and not cycles being past down generation to generation. Maybe Harry's generation will set things right which the latter could not. Maybe Neville's will act differently than Pettigrew (rat!_-sorry can't help myself!) I would only hope that poor Neville will not fall prey to evil as peter. It was nice to see Neville take the advice given by Harry and Ron (in book one I think) where he learns to stand up to his friends and enemies. I would hope that he would progress to mature and really learn that yes he is worth "10 Malfoys" ( sorry I just can't stand to think Neville to become evil like Pettigrew. i would hope he would see his real worth!) Now a question for you: does any one know how old Percy and the Twins are? Skimmel (I'm in Houston too by the way) -- I really enjoyed reading the parallels you came up with. Very insightful! I also liked the final scenario you imagined. I do think Harry will eventually have to defeat Voldemort *without* Dumbledore. Whether Ron & Hermione will be in on the final action or not is interesting to ponder. I *will* miss Oliver! I also hadn't thought of that one yet. I think Harry might well be chosen captain next year. But, it wouldn't be too surprising for it to be one of the Weasleys (or co-captains); they are very well-liked. Here's what I think on the ages: I have no hard evidence to support it, but I think that it is likely that Percy was a 7th year in Book 3 and won't be at Hogwarts in Book 4. I really need to re-read soon, but wasn't he a prefect in Bks 1 & 2? It would stand to reason that they could be prefects for perhaps 2 or 3 years, but probably Head Boy & Head Girl are a "sr year" sort of honor. It also seemed as though Mrs. Weasley thought it was time for the twins to have been named prefects at the beginning of Bk 3 (and I *think* the twins are 5th years in that one). I sort of gather that the Weasley kids are all 2 years apart in age, except for Ron and Ginny who must be only one year apart in age. Perhaps others will have more solid evidence to support the ages of the Weasleys. I just re-read Sorcerer -- do we know (or does anyone have any theories regarding) why Dumbledore had possession of James Potter's invisibility cloak? Date: 2/17/00 9:10 am (ET) When Hagrid told his story about borrowing the flying motorcycle from Sirius Black, I went back and reread the first chapter of Sorcerer's Stone. Sure enough, there it was just as Hagrid reported. Even the bit about needing to return the bike. Ms. Rowling is being very consistent through the series which tells me she spent a lot of time thinking about where the books are going. I imagine its hard enough to be perfectly consistent from the start of a book to the end... Mark Twain savaged James F. Cooper for being inconsistent... and harder still across a series of books. Look at the Star Wars movies and you can see what kind of a logical box a stray line can put you in. So far, I've found nothing along these lines to critize in the Harry Potter books. As for Harry becoming the captain of the team. We know that Oliver was the captain of the Griffindor team his fifth, sixth and seventh year at Hogwarts (Books 1, 2 & 3). Since Harry was the first first year to play in many years, its safe to say Oliver didn't start until his second year. So Oliver was Captain of the team in his fourth year on the team. The next season will be Harry's fourth year on the team (Book 4). It fits together and Harry does love Quidditch. Somehow I don't think it will be though. Oliver spent a lot of time working out new plans and training schedules and what not. I think Harry will save his time for other things like fighting off he who must not be named. Perhaps one of the Weasley twins. I thought I was one of the only ones who would miss dear oliver, but I guess we all subconsiously become attached to side characters without even knowing it. I guess they're sort of constants, things that you expect to be there and stay the same... and when they disappear you feel some sort of a loss inside huh? About the ages, JK never really goes out and says exactly what year the twins or Percy are in. I don't know, I think we will only know for sure when the fourth book comes out because if Percy is still there we know what year he's in and what year the twins are in. About the invisibility cloak, I never even thought about why Dumbledore would have James' cloak in his posession. I guess it depends on how he got it from James. I could be that James left it in his will, or james gave it directly to him. Or, Dumbledore might have confiscated it from him one day, You never know. But it is an interesting point to think about... what role does Dumbledore really have in this book? He's seems like just a guide to help Harry along but I can't help but wondering if Dumbledore is more involved in this than is presented to us now. Another thing... did you guys notice that in book 2 Hermione mentions that Moaning Myrtle haunts the first floor bath room but when harry follows the disembodied voice and finds petrified Ms. Norris they are on the second floor. Supposedly Moaning Myrtle flooded the bathroom and that's why Ms.Norris was saved from being killed and only petrified. So what floor is her bathroom on? I think I'd agree that the Weasley's would be more likely to become Captains although I wonder how responsible they are. But I actually wish that one of the girls becomes captain. Perhaps Angelina Johnson (who Lee seems to be fond of!) or maybe Alicia Spinnet! It would be nice to see a girl at the head of the team. Oh.. Didn't they say in the first book that they go to some lengths to keep the Muggles from knowing that the Magic world exists? Minerva McGonagal was upset that people were celebrating in plain view of the Muggles. They hide platform 9 3/4 from the Muggles. When Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew had their fight that killed all the muggles they cooked up that story about the gas explosion to hide the fact magic was involved. Everyone was upset when the Weasley's flying car was actually seen. On the other hand, the Dursleys, who are about as Muggle as you get, are well aware of Magic. Weren't Hermione's parents with her in Diagon Alley? Wasn't that one kid, name escapes me, taking pictures of everything at Hogwarts to show his Muggle parents when he was petrified? Didn't Cornelius Fudge let the Prime Minister know the true nature of Sirius Black when he escaped from Azkaban? I'm unclear as to when Muggles are allowed to see Magic. I thought I had it figured out with only immediate relatives getting to know. Not that it matters much. I don't insist on perfect consistency. I'm just a little confused. Didn't Cornelius Fudge let the Prime Minister know the true nature of Sirius Black when he escaped from Azkaban? That's so funny because I was thinking of that very thing last night as I was re-reading Chamber! The very first chapter of Sorcerer notes that the Dursleys were very afraid that someone would find out their "secret." Why are the Dursleys considered "trustworthy" muggles if you will? Ron also mentioned that wizards have had to put spells on muggles to keep them from remembering things that would clue them in that there are still witches and wizards throughout the land. But, you're right -- what about the Grangers, Dursleys and other muggle relatives? Good question to ponder. Gotta run for now. If you think about it, don't children of Muggle parentage need permission to go to hogwarts from their parents and guardians? I guess the biggest reason that rule is there is so that Muggles won't try and use witches and wizards ( insisting that everything be solved by magic ) But even though the muggle parents/families know these children are wizards and witches these children are still not allowed to perform magic at home, therefore, these muggles, although knowing that they are wizards, don't know the extent of the power and magic that they posess. Once they are out of school, I guess they figure that they are responsible enough to decide when and where to use magic. make sense? But, I think he and Fred will actually be co-captains of the Gryffindor team next year. Since Rowling has said that the books will become darker and that there will be a death in Book 4, I would be more inclined to say that the "death(s)" will be somehow related to Voldemort/evil/dark forces rather than in Quidditch. Although I suppose the dark forces could cause Quidditch-related deaths. I figured it was the only place likely to have Time Out NY in Houston, and they do have it -- but it runs about a week behind release in NY. Didn't we decide based on internal evidence that Harry would have been born 31 July 1980? The 500-yr death day party for Nearly Headless Nick (who died 1492 we're told) must have been in 1992, and that was Harry's second year at Hogwarts. He had turned 12 that previous July, right? Out of curiosity (I really must have too much time on my hands), I checked a perpetual calendar and it seems Rowling was one weekday off in Sorcerer's Stone. Harry's 11th birthday when he finds out he's a wizard -- 31 July 1991 -- was a Wed, not a Tuesday. Trivial fact for the day! Cool...we're the same age... :) I think Harry might become Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher once he's done with Hogwarts...unless, of course, he's still battling Voldemort. Wouldn't that be an ideal job for him, though? Then Draco Malfoy will probably get Potions master. *rolls eyes* -- JoAnna From armando128_sc at yahoo.com Sat Feb 26 01:58:00 2000 From: armando128_sc at yahoo.com (armando128_sc at yahoo.com) Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 20:58:00 -0500 Subject: What did James & Lily do after Hogwa Message-ID: Original Yahoo! At the end, when Dumbledore is talking with just Harry and Harry is concerned about his likenesses with Voldemort . . . Dumbledore tells him that he can speak parseltongue because Voldemort put some of his powers into Harry the night he killed Harry's parents. In that passage, Dumbledore told Harry that "Lord Voldemort is the last remaining descendant of Salazar Slytherin." In the UK version, he tells Harry that Voldemort is the last remaining "ancestor" of Slytherin. Typo? The American editors must have thought so. Or, is there more to it than that? Hmmmmm . . . I don't think he is for a number of reasons (although we don't know much about James Potter's family though, do we?). Harry bears too much physical resemblance to both parents, a point that Rowling has stressed, to be Voldemort's son. And, I guess he saw his grandparents in the Mirror of Erised, so he's unlikely to be his grandson through his father's side, right? Actually, in my earlier post, I was focusing on the "ancestor" of Slytherin versus "descendant" of Slytherin. If Voldemort is the *ancestor* of Slytherin, that has very different implications than if he is merely the last remaining *descendant* of Slytherin. I think it must be a typo that the American editors caught since the adjectives "last remaining" certainly imply descendant rather than ancestor. But, I was just wondering if anyone else had thoughts about the implications *if* the UK version is *not* a typo. It seems that many of the Potter fans have read and reread the Potter books to the point of saturation and are crying for something else to carry them over until book four comes out. There has been a big boom in Juvenile Fantasy Books as a result. Sales of the Chronicles of Narnia series and the Prydain series are way up as a result. The books that are being recommended to "tide" the kids over until July: Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis Prydain series - Lloyd Alexander Holes - Louis Sachar Redwall series - Jacques (?) I capture the Castle - Dodie Smith The Golden Compass - ? Half Magic - Edward Gager (Last name?) Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle. The Wonderdul Wizard of Oz - Frank L. Baum (Trivia question: The movie version of the Wizard of Oz was nominated for Best Picture and probably would have won any other year. What was the movie that won the academy award for Best Picture that year?) I know the Prydain series (The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, etc) and the Narnia series pretty well but I don't know the others. (Wrinkle in Time is next on my reading list.) But I've never really been tempted to reread them. The kids in the NY Times story find them to be barely adequate replacements for Harry. I've read each of them twice to myself and am reading Prisoner of Azkaban aloud to my youngest. Which brings us back to our old question: What is it about Harry Potter books that arouses such passion? What does Rowling put in her books that C.S. Lewis didn't that excites the reader? Or perhaps it goes the other way. What did C.S. Lewis put in his book that Rowling left out that "turns off" the reader? I loved The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when I first read it, but when I went back to it, it was such an obvious religious allegory that I felt manipulated because I didn't recognize it when I first read it. Wrinkle in Time and the other books about the Murray family are wonderful. I only enjoy her children's books though. Her grown up books are a bit too mature for me, about relationships and things like that. :-) But L'Engle was what got me interested in fantasy, before I knew what it meant. (Try Swiftly Tilting Planet too) I think the booksellers should start expanding their lists beyond books with obvious magical elements. I think The Giver should be added, but mostly for pre-teens and not younger children. For younger kids, any Chris Van Allsburg book is great. And the answer to you trivia question would be one of my mother's favorite films...Gone with the Wind. Not only do they get progressively darker and more serious, but they become more geared towards adult readers, because in addition to being religious allegories, they were social commentaries of the time. After the first books, kids tend to get bored with the rest. It was only as an adult that I was able to fully understand and appreciate them. BTW, sorry about the run-on sentences. I get started with a thought and my brain takes off without care for grammar. I have one theory (spoiler ahead for those who haven't read book 3). SPOILER Maybe Voldemort had (or created) a heavy-duty version of the time-turner(?) McGonagill gave Hermione. But instead of going an hour backward for each turn, this one went back a century (or millinium). He used it to go back in time, where he became Slytherin's ancestor. But my real thoughts are that this is a typo. If Dumbledor really did say "ancestor," wouldn't Harry have asked how this could be? Unless he had too much on his mind. Only time will tell. HPFG Header: No: HPFGUIDX C536 From: plinsenmayer Subject: Ages Date: 2/29/00 4:22 pm (ET) We had a bit of discussion a few weeks ago about the ages of the various Weasley children. I think I posted that I believed that they are basically all 2 years apart, except for Ron & Ginny, who are only 1 year apart. I did find confirmation that the twins Fred & George are 5th years in POA, which is when Ron & Harry are 3rd years and Ginny is a 2nd year. See page 61. I haven't seen confirming evidence yet, but I do think most likely Percy is a 7th year in POA. Was there mention of his graduating? I can't remember. I would think Head Boy would be a one-yr (final yr) sort of position. Another question from my re-reading of POA. Hermione mentions that her birthday is coming up in September, when they were all buying their supplies (she uses her parents' birthday money to buy Crookshanks). Would she be nearly a year older than Harry or is she in fact 2 months younger? In Texas at least (and I *think* elsewhere in the US maybe), the cut-off date for each school year is Aug 31st. So, if works that way in Britain, I guess Hermione would be one of the "older" ones in her class (as was I with my Nov birthday) and Harry would be on the younger side with his July birthday. Can any of our UK members comment? And, it still bugs me that we don't see Harry *giving* any presents. She's just mentioned her birthday -- I'd think they would show Harry picking up some gift in Diagon Alley to give her later on her actual birthday. I think I mentioned before, but we see Harry receiving Christmas and birthday gifts from Ron & Hermione, but I don't see him *giving* any gifts, which strikes me as odd for some reason.
