The Golden Compass is by Philip Pullman and very good.
I loved The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when I first read it, but
when I went back to it, it was such an obvious religious allegory that
I felt manipulated because I didn't recognize it when I first read it.
Wrinkle in Time and the other books about the Murray family are
wonderful. I only enjoy her children's books though. Her grown up books
are a bit too mature for me, about relationships and things like that. :-)
But L'Engle was what got me interested in fantasy, before I knew what
it meant. (Try Swiftly Tilting Planet too)
I think the booksellers should start expanding their lists beyond
books with obvious magical elements. I think The Giver should be added,
but mostly for pre-teens and not younger children. For younger kids,
any Chris Van Allsburg book is great.
And the answer to you trivia question would be one of my mother's favorite
films...Gone with the Wind.
