Barbara - Did you ever get an answer to your question? The reply chain
seems to immediately vanish into movie discussions.
At first I rejected the cliche answer that I like the books because I
identified with the main character. Then as I re-read the part where
Harry and Ron steal the car to get to Hogwarts, I changed my mind. Harry
was caught up with the momentum into making the awful decision but
at the time it seemed perfectly logical. Then confronted with his own
foolishness, they felt very stupid. Who hasn't experienced something
similar emotionally if not physically?
The tone of the books are perfect. I read them to my daughter and she
laughes in places and shivers in places as well. I just wish I was young
enough to actually laugh out loud at all the same places she does.
On a more theoretical basis, Harry is a classic character, the little
guy, downtrodden by primal muggle forces, who finds something special
within himself, that something extra we all hope to find, and triumphs
against overwhelming odds.
Who wouldn't like the Harry Potter books?
Now if I could only find someone outside of cyberspace who has actually
read the books.
Stephen
