be more likely to have heard of Washington.

Actually, Virginia is both south and west of Washington, DC, and all
of what is called Northern Virginia is a suburb of Washington and is
considered part of the Washington metropolitan area. In fact, a lot of
Northern Virginia was once part of the city of Washington, until some
time in the 1800s when it was decided that the part of the city west of
the Potomac river should be returned to the state of Virginia. From a
cultural point of view, Northern Virginia is part of Washington, and the
rest of Virginia is part of a very different cultural tradition. Fairfax,
Virginia is a small suburban town about 10 miles or so west of DC.

Sorry if I am lecturing, and I apologize to anyone who didnt want a
geography lesson, but I thought some of you might be interested.
