I haven't listened to the debate yet, but I was reminded of an article
posted on salon.com entitled "Harry Potter's Girl Problems" (or some such
nonsense) that went on a rant about how all the girls in the HP books
were restrained in traditional roles--the librarian, nurse, gardening,
and on the sidelines of the adventures. The author also went on a tear
on Hermione being the stereotypical nerdy-type girl who wasn't all that
respected by the boys (I can only assume the woman meant Harry and Ron)
and needed rescuing (troll in the toilet, I presume). When all was said
and done, she was *very* ugly about the HP books. I was quite revolted
at the need to through hyper-feministic morals on what is essentially a
ripping good yarn. She also failed to notice that Hermione's uber-geek
tendencies help in the mystery solving, that 3/7 Gryffindor Quidditch
team members are female and are the ones who score all but 150 of the
points, and that the deputy headmistress is Minvera McGonagall, a very
strong female character!
Sorry about the rant.
