I hate to agree with you all, but it seems to me that Sirius is the
logical one, if only to complete the parallel with Louisa May Alcott's
Dan:

Dan
-------------------------
Handsome and manly
Short-tempered
Impulsive, often reckless
Thrown in prison for murder (it was self-defense)
Released from prison ruined and disfigured
Dies in an act of valor

Sirius
--------------------
Handsome and manly
Short-tempered
Impulsive, often reckless
Thrown in prison for murder (which he did not commit at all)
Breaks out of prison ruined and disfigured
Will die in an act of valor?

Of course, I may be looking too hard for parallels ... There is a
theory among literary scholars that Alcott may have deliberately killed
off Dan because she couldn't reconcile her love of his strength and
free-spiritedness with her conservative Victorian upbringing. Hopefully,
our modern "Jo" harbors no such ambivalence about my gender and will not
kill off Sirius (or her other somewhat "Dan-like" character, one Ronald
Weasley) from ulterior motives, and may indeed allow him to be acquitted
and go on to find a happy existence. In any case though, I don't think
closure one way or another will come for Sirius until Book 7. We don't
even know that Sirius will *appear* in this book -- all JKR has said is
that Harry will be "in touch" (which could mean owl post) with him.

POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW!!!

Besides, all the latest Book 4 rumors says that the victim will be
a *teacher*.
