Hi:
<<<I'm not convinced by the theory that Sirius Black would be killed
in Book 4, because he hasn't appeared for long enough for me to really
'care' about him and there is mileage left in that character.>>>
Well, hopefully you are right. I do care about this character, but
there are characters that probably do have longer-standing appeal for
more readers.
<<<I hate to say it, but I think Hagrid is a more likely candidate,
because the alternatives are too horrible to think about. If it's someone
we *really* care about, who else could it be?>>>>
I have him pegged as a character likely to die at some point -- is Book
IV too soon though? But, you're right Neil -- if not Hagrid, then who
else? My sister says Dumbledore (which fits in with the spoiler theory
Dave raised earlier). But, I would bet Dumbledore would be around until
Book 6 or 7. McGonagall? Neville?
If JKR has said the death of this character will be upsetting but not
damaging, then how pivotal would the character have to be for it to be
upsetting to most readers? Damaging: Ron, Hermione obviously . . . I
put Hagrid, Dumbledore, Lupin & Black into this category myself. Maybe
extremely damaging is where Ron & Hermione belong. Upsetting to me would
be one of the other Weasleys, McGonagall, Neville, Hedwig . . .
