Simon -- I agree with your analysis that McGonagall might be the one to
die. If the rumour that it's a teacher is true, McGonagall fits. She's
also someone that the readers care about. Her death would be "upsetting"
but not "damaging."

Dumbledore could also be said to fall into the category of "teacher,"
but like you, I think he's needed as Harry's mentor for the remaining
books. I fully expect him to die -- but at the end of Book 6 or somewhere
in Book 7.

Going with the teacher theory still -- are there any other teachers we'd
care about if they died? What if Snape is redeemed and dies? Hooch,
Pompfrey, Sprout, Flitwick, Trelawney -- probably none of those are
people we care about.

Is Hagrid still going to be a teacher? I too have heard JKR say that
*Lupin* is her favorite character . . . does she have 2 favorites
(Hagrid & Lupin)?

The other possibility is that the death we'll all care about could very
well be a character we don't know yet. The new DADA instructor?? I for
one would have been very sad & upset if Lupin had been killed off at
the end of Book 3, and yet he was a new character in Book 3. I would
have been similarly upset if Black had been killed off in Book 3 (or
is killed off in Book IV). So . . . isn't it possible it's someone we
don't know yet, rendering the conjecturing meaningless? <g>
