If Crookshanks is an animagus then I think he must be an illegal
one. Hermione looked up animagi while she was doing her homework and that
book describes what animal they turn into and what kind of markings they
have. You would think Hermione would recognize her own cat in there. They
didn't start animagi until after third year started, so she already had
her cat.
