Two of my former fifth grade students happened to be visiting me here at
home when "the book" arrived by post at 1:05 EST. We fell into silence
as my husband took out his penknife and carefully sliced through the
packing tape on the box. The sparkle in the eyes of the children was
a priceless sight, as I slowly lifted the packing material to expose
the cover. The two boys and I relished the suspense. (Even my "muggle"
husband seemed to understand the significance of the event!) Then,
I slowly and reverently lifted the book from its packing box. The boys
and I ran our fingers gently across the cover. We passed it in a circle
to feel the weight. What an impressive volume it is! We then studied
the cover trying to decide who the pictured characters were. Finally,
we checked the page numbers...yes...734! I shut the book and returned
it to the box. What a memorable experience, especially having shared it
with with two eleven year-olds. They think it's rather awesome that their
"old" teacher is such a devoted Harry Potter fan. I think it's rather
awesome that children around the world are chomping at the bit to read
a book of 734 pages...relatively unheard of in this day and age! Later
tonight, I will settle in and begin to read. Right now, I'm quite content
to savor the "arrival" scenaro. It was truly a "magical" moment!
