Interestingly enough, I've heard similiar complaints referring to Harry
Potter's predecessor: Tim Hunter of the "Books of Magic." Reviews were
sugesting that the first few books had Tim as being too passive. And
Harry does come off that way a bit, but bear in mind, both boys were
just beginning to discover this whole other world of magic, and it's
all too much to take in at first. But by POA, Harry's starting to be
more assertive. He's more comfortable in his surroundings, and seeing
Hogwarts as his home.
On another note:
I've been noticing some reviews saying that GOF is a more adult type
of book, than the first three books, but what of it? Harry's older now,
and growing up, and of course the book should reflect this. Like "Books
of Magic," it's a hero's progression, a coming of age tale. K, jumping
off the soapbox now. LOL!
