The Trekker - Trekkie distinction is kind of an old one which
may be part of Nicholas's confusion. In the days before the first
movie, Trekkie was definitely a bad thing to call someone. They were
non-believers. Infidels. Folks who used the term sci-fi rather than the
more appropriate SF. After the movies and the new series, a whole new
bunch of fans came in who didn't care and Trekkie became more common
usage.
