Just a thought about Snape's notoriously cranky behaviour towards our
young hero. He never has been nice to him, as we all know, but I think
it has less to do with the feud he had with the senior Potter than
we have previously thought. Since he was a death eater turned spy and
knows that Lucius Malfoy was one of the DE's, perhaps he is loath to
demonstrate anything that remotely look like support of Harry because
Draco (a Slytherin) is not beneath sending off an owl to daddy dearest
reporting such behavior. If the possibility of Voldemort returning had
been dreamt of by his supporters, word that a former DE was now protecting
the boy who brought about his downfall would not go over well when V
returned. Therefore, Snape's ill-temper could make it easier for him to
engage in espionage with a bit more safety than if he had treated Harry
with a bit more leniency. Naturally, the ill-will between James and his
cohorts and Snape was a good cover for how he feels about Harry. This is
not to say that he is not just good at carrying a grudge against Prongs
and his pals, of course.
