Someone was talking about how Snape justified his actions towards Quirrell
when he returns to Voldemort. I came up with the following thought.
All Snape needs to say is that he thought Quirrell was acting for himself
and did not know he was working for Voldemort. He then says that he
acted to stop Quirrell as to safeguard the Stone for when he could get
it to Voldemort.
I would guess that if Snape had suspected Quirrell of working for
Voldemort then Dumbledore would also have worked it out or Snape would
have told him. When Snape was trying to stop Quirrell getting to the
Stone he is keeping in Dumbledore's good book.
