I fervently believe it is NOT short for Harold!!! I'm writing a fanfic
right now, and there will be no giving him the name Harold.

He's always called just Harry (even though Ron gets called Ronald at
times) and he shows up on the Marauder's Map as Harry (even though others
show up with their more formal name -- GoF). He's just Harry!!!
