Book 1.

I think Harry would be embarrassed to ask Sirius or Dumbledore very much
about his parents. Just his personality...

In Book 1, Hermione tells Harry that's she heard of him, and lists a
couple of books that she's read that mentioned him, IIRC MAGIC IN OUR
TIMES, and Harry changed the subject instead of asking what they said
about him. I think he's so bothered by being a celebrity that he tries
to shove it out of his mind instead of researching it.
