Since Voldemort is Tom Marvolo Riddle (CoS ch17) that would make them
related and Harry could also be the heir of Slytherin. The hat thought
he belonged there, and he is a parselmouth.

Dumbledore doesn't actual say Harry isn't the heir, just that he truly
belongs in Gryffindor. He avoids the question (Cos ch 18 p245 UK).

Or maybe I'm reading to much into it. I just can't help thinking that
the reason that Voldemort is so eager to kill James and Harry is that
they are also heirs.

Do we know for sure which house James Potter was in?
