I think JKR likes the idea that creatures regarded as mythical in the
Muggle world are real beings in the magical world and that the myths arose
from occasional sightings by Muggles. This device, and the fact that
the Ministry of Magic has to fight to keep the 'other' world a secret,
add to the believability.

I'm sure JKR is more than capable of making up new names and creatures,
but it's great that she weaves in some well-established myths and reflects
the commonly-held beliefs in the behaviour of the creatures.

I think it was in Book 1 that she tied in the Loch Ness Monster in
this way?

There are endless possibilities...

- could UFOs really be flying cars, carpets and broomsticks artfully
disguised with spells, by order of the MoM?

- are close encounters with aliens really meetings with House-Elves
taking a peek into the Muggle world?

- could the Bermuda Triangle be a portal to the magical world, sucking
in ships and spitting them out somewhere else (cf. the Durmstrang
sailing ship)?

- is the Yeti really Hagrid's mother, Fridwulfa, taking a break in
the mountains?
