The Greeks named that bird a phoenix (based, like Phoenicia, on their
word for reddish-purple) and said it re-burnt every 500 words.

But the Greeks knew from nothing about phoenices until they went to
Egypt and learned about the bennu. "Bennu" meaning "shining" and it is
a bird that re-burns itself when the 1461 cycles of the 365 day year
align again with 1460 cycles of the solar year.
