In the UK, most Christmas carols that are actually sung to tend to be the
more religious ones. Jingle Bells et al. are usually used on the muzak
tapes blasted through shopping centres but most people would struggle
to think of the words after 'Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle ......'

Also, you would be astonished (and saddened) at how many children
will joyfully sing along with Christmas carols (or anything else that
has a jolly tune) with absolutely zero comprehension of what they are
singing. To be fair, a lot of the more traditional carols are in a less
accessible English, but the basic rule seems to be just sing it. It would
certainly account for the number of permutations you get ('While shepherds
washed their socks by night', 'Most highly flavoured gravy' etc).

I just can't imagine a suit of armour singing Jingle Bells anyway. Not
enough gravitas!
