It seems to me that Harry tries to avoid looking at his scar, not just
because it is a constant reminder of his painful past, but also because
he gets so much unwanted attention from it when others notice it and
realize who he is. Harry is a humble kid who'd surely prefer a lot less
notoriety. He'd probably keep the scar hidden under his bangs if he
could, but given the unruliness of his hair he realizes the futility
in trying. Actually, Harry's unmanageable hair itself might add to his
avoidance of the mirror.
