This is indeed the case. I realised a little while after I had posted
that I had made a mistake. It seemed wrong while I was writing it but
I could not work out where the mistake was.
Hedwig is female, Ook is male.

As to the initial. In the papers today (or more correctly The Sunday Mail
- JKR's favourite paper) there is a report saying that the K has been
added to her initials to appeal to more readers. It continues to say
that she has no middle name, the initial has been added by either her
of the pubishers of the book. How true this is I do not know, but with
the recent comments that JKR has made againt the Mail I see no reason
why they would not have gone out to find some information on her that
the public did not know.
