>>>The whole stereotyping and pigeonholing of books REALLY irritates me
I have to join Johns rant here. This drives me nuts too. A few weeks
ago I went to Borders, intending to buy the sequel (forgot the title)
to Golden Compass by Philip Pullman and Tales of the City by Armistead
Maupin. I had bought Golden Compass in another store and it was in the
scifi section. I did not find anything by Pullman in Borders scifi
section. I finally found it in the Young Adult section. Then I went
to the Fiction section to look for Tales of the City but didnt find
anything by Maupin. It turns out that his books are in the Gay and
Lesbian Literature section, I suppose because Maupin is gay and some
(but not even most!) of the characters in the book are gay. Is it really
necessary to segregate literature this way? I mean, it is convenient in
some ways, but it means that only people who already have a particular
interest will be likely to learn about it.
