As a rookie teacher (going into my second year this fall) I think I need
some help with this one...

Today while teaching I gave my class a 25-minute time block of SSR
(sustained silent reading). One of my students was reading SS. When it
came time for one-sentence feedback, she said, "I really like this book,
but I can't understand most of what Hagrid is saying." Some of my other
fifth graders had a little trouble with the dialect when we read SS
during the regular school year.

My question: what dialect is Hagrid speaking, specifically? (I have a
bit of an idea for a mini-project where the kids map the factual places
in SS, find out fun facts, etc.)

Also, if there are any other teachers out there, how can I help my average
and developmental readers get over this "accent" hurdle in the future?

Long live Harry Potter--the Boy Who Lived!
