Hi:

Tom Riddle (later known as Lord Voldemort) killed his father and his
paternal grandparents (they were the 3 Riddles killed in Ch 1 of GoF). Tom
Riddle Sr. (Voldy's father) abandoned his mother when he found out she
was a witch, before Voldy was even born. Voldy's mother was a descendant
of Slytherin and gave him the name Tom after his father, Marvolo after
his grandfather (maternal??) and the Riddle surname of course. She died
soon after he was born, and he was raised in a muggle orphanage.

James Potter being Voldy's son. I don't think so. Someone theorized
recently that the Potter surname could have come from James' mother --
i.e., Voldy sired James but abandoned the family and the mother didn't
give James the Riddle surname, but her own, Potter. I'm not sure why
I don't find that theory all that compelling -- a bit too cliche I
guess. Too easy. Too Star Wars-ish.

I don't think in any case that James could be muggle-born. Harry is a
half-blood, and his mum is definitely muggle-born -- so that means James
is a wizard by birth.

My thoughts --

Penny
