REMEMBER, AT END OF BOOK ONE, Harry asked Dumbledore what *he* saw in
the Mirror of Erised and Dumbledore said he saw nice clean warm socks
and Harry asked how can socks be anyone's heart's desire and Dumbledore
said a person can never have too many socks?

Lee says House Elves also love socks [I corrected her, we have seen only
one House Elf, Dobby, being obsessed with socks] and therefore Dumbledore
must be a House Elf. She says:
Dumbledore says the Mirror of Erised would show him himself holding
two socks. He is therefore a house elf who's shapechanged to human,
and it's illegal for him to use a wand. And he wants to be free.

This explains his willingness to hire free house elves. It also explains
why he wants to keep Dementors out of Hogwarts: they make him too
depressed -- because he's guilty of running away from his master.
Probably Nicholas Flammel helped him escape his master. But who's his
master? A Death Eater? The former headmaster of Hogwarts? The Slytherin
family (which would mean Riddle)?

And oh yes, if house elves work for no money, how come the Weaselys
can't afford one? House elves must need something that poor families
can't afford but that richer folk can. Perhaps they eat Galleons.
