Hi Cairnsy - welcome to the club!

Your analysis of Percy was *very* comprehensive, especially as you've
only read Book 1! Are you a psychologist?

And we are discussing Percy this week...

You're absolutely right to say that Percy had a hard act to follow
in Charlie and Bill, but I think Ron has it much worse, having Percy
the model prefect and the twins (fun, popular and good at Quidditch)
to follow on top of that.

The thing that comes across most strongly throughout the books is Percy's
keen adherence to rules and regulations. This probably began at home
with his taking responsibility for his younger siblings and wanting to
set a good example to them. At school he was rewarded for his naturally
law-abiding character with appropriate positions of authority, which
reinforced his already pompous air.

By Book 4, Percy is at the Ministry of Magic and has become so slavishly
loyal to his boss that he's prepared to cover up anything - no matter
how outrageous - to protect him. However, this is just him trying to
prove his mettle in his new job, and being inflexible as a result.

On consideration, I don't think Percy will become corrupt. I think he
was just a bit blinkered and wet behind the ears in his new job. He's
had an educational experience in Book4, and he is well placed to lead
the fight against V.

I hope there's a softer side to Percy that we haven't seen. He had a
girlfriend at Hogwarts and if (as at my school) the Head Boy and Head
Girl were chosen by their peers, he may have been quite popular in his
year. Part of the problem is that we've most often seen Percy relating to
Harry and the younger members of his own family, who are nearly always
up to mischief (even Ginny goes off the rails in Book 2). Then we see
him working for the MoM - the home of rulemaking and enforcement.

Er, any thoughts on what Percy does to relax?

I'm bound to have repeated something someone else has said here, because
I'm just rambling off the top of my head...

Neil
