The people who have trouble imagine crowds of wizard folk all wearing
hats might be better able to imagine it after spending a long day at a
good Renaissance Faire, where ALL the actors and all the good costumes
among the 'turkeys' (paying customers, like me) are wearing hats or caps
or snoods or kerchiefs over their heads: one of the Ren Faire websites
even explains that in 16th century England, it was ILLEGAL for anyone
over age 13 to go outside with their head uncovered (altho' Faire,
at least, seems to accept flower wreaths as a head covering).

I imagine that the students would take their hats off (the hat being
part of the uniform) only in their own House.

Earlier today I was wondering about the spectators at Quidditch games:
would a sea of pointed hats block the view of everyone but the first
row and the top box? Are the Quidditch hats (hats with team logos, etc,
sold to fans) also tall pointed hats, or another style?

Because adult wizards, who don't have to be in uniform, wear various
styles of hat: the bag hat (sort of like Santa's elves' hats), the
mortarboard, Neville's grandma's Victorian bonnet with the stuffed
vulture....
