Exactly! How *did* he turn out to be such an inherently good person and
so capable of being sociable, moral, etc.?? Given the picture painted
of his life, he should, by all accounts, be completely devoid of social
skills & the ability to feel & express emotions. One would think. He is
painted as somewhat shy & awkward, but nevertheless, he is also a leader
and makes friends with Ron & others quickly enough.

Remember at the end of Sorcerer's Stone, when Quirrel couldn't touch Harry
without his skin blistering? Dumbledore said that because Harry's mother
died to save him, it placed a powerful countercharm on him. Riddle said
something to the same effect in CoS. Perhaps that's the reason Harry
managed to be a "normal" kid -- the powerful magic of his parents'
love kept him from feeling too unloved and neglected. After all, in
both the Muggle and Magic worlds, the love of a mother and/or father
for a child is a powerful thing. Although Harry didn't grow up with his
parents, their love for him remained with him and kept him from suffering
psychological trauma due to treatment from the Dursleys.

That's my guess, anyway. :)
