Hi:
Boy, lots of discussion last night on all sorts of topics.
IMO, the fact that it is stressed again & again that Harry has his
mother's eyes has something to do with Snape. I think the relationship
between Harry having his mother's eyes and Snape's hatred of Harry will
be revealed in a later book. I think we've floated this theory before but
here it is again. Snape was in love with Lily (whether secretly or openly
I can't guess) at Hogwarts, and hence his hatred of James Potter had at
least as much or more to do with James & Lily's relationship than it had
to do with James' Quidditch skills. I don't know if I believe Snape was
actually spurned by Lily or if he just had this from afar wild love for
her that was completely unrequited.
In any case, I think whenever Snape looks into Harry's eyes, he's reminded
of Lily. And, of course, since Harry otherwise looks exactly like James,
this infuriates Snape. Hence, his horrible treatment of Harry.
As for Lily and whether or not she's really Harry's mum, I think the
Mirror of Erised and the photo album do establish that Lily Potter was
his mum. And, actually, Hagrid did say in Sorcerer's Stone that he saw
the bodies of Harry's parents, didn't he??
Plus, for so many people to comment that Harry has his mother's eyes
would add support to the fact that it must be Lily.
