I was actually going to post the same theory when I turned on the
computer, and lo and behold, there it already was. I guess great Ravenclaw
minds think alike. :)

If Snape was in love with Lily *and* otherwise competitive with James,
he might have several levels of resentment. Aside from the obvious of
wanting Lily for her own sake, he might be thinking everything from "James
beat me out *again*!" to "If she'd married me, she'd still be alive!"

And, like Penny said, when Snape sees someone who looks like James
"strutting" (his word, not mine) around with Lily's eyes, it reminds
him all over again.
