Lily's origins are certainly a key factor... She may have been a Slytherin
(as someone has suggested), she may have been a parselmouth even, and
she may have been involved with Tom Riddle.

Lily might have been a Slytherin (or even James -- I don't think it's
definitely stated which house he was in) but as for being involved
with Riddle, I don't think so. In CoS, it's stated (by Dumbledore, I
think) that Tom Riddle had been a student at Hogwarts fifty years ago,
which means, if Lily was still alive, she'd over sixty years old. That's
pretty old to have a 12-year-old son, unless wizards age differently than
Muggles. Unless, of course, Lily was somehow related to Riddle, which
could be a possibility. Or perhaps James was related to Riddle! It's
said by Riddle himself that he and Harry share many characteristics --
black hair, both half-bloods, etc. Perhaps Riddle/Voldemort is Harry's
grandfather, and the reason Riddle/Voldemort wanted to kill James was
because the son was trying to thwart his father's evil plans? Possible,
but I don't know. It's just a theory. That might make it too Star
Wars-ish, anyway.

I was also thinking this weekend...since Hagrid went to Hogwarts with
Tom Riddle, fifty years ago, that means Hagrid would be over sixty years
old as well. He doesn't seem that old! I always thought of him in his
late 30's-early 40's. I suppose he could be...I mean, if Dumbledore was
a teacher at Hogwarts fifty years ago, he's probably in his 70's-80's.

Also, in one of the books (I think it's Sorcerer's Stone) it's mentioned
that James, Lily, and Harry Potter lived in a house in "Godric's Hollow"
when Voldemort showed up and killed James & Lily. "Godric" as in "Godric
Gryffindor," perhaps?
