Gnarl means:
to twist into a knotted or distorted form.
So Gnarled is possibly what Jo meant... though I can't seem to locate
Snarled on the On-Line dictionary at www.infoplease.com
MS-WORD says Snarled is like Jumbled, Confused, Diordered, Chaotic.
