A madam is a polite way of addressing a female. Professor implies an
educational qualification.

*** I knew that much! I was thinking more of the association with
magic/witchcraft. Seafront palmists and crystal ball gazers are often
called Madam Something (mainly the women), which I assumed was an
affectation. I just wondered if it meant something beyond that.

Warlock has certain negative connotations (satan).

***Except that warlock is usually taken as the male equivalent of
witch, so both have certain negative connotations. Wizard is a bit more
myth'n'magic and could be regarded as unisex, perhaps. There's no such
thing as a Wizardess is there (unless you count Sorceress)?

Thanks for the note on Scabbers, Simon. I'd forgotten that bit of
the tale.

Neil
