I've always wondered about the difference as well. Especially as warlocks
are referred to in official capacities a couple of times.
Book 1: the Warlocks Convention of 1709 banned dragon breeding.
Book 2: the International Confederation of Warlocks Statute of Secrecy
is cited on the warning letter from the Ministry to Harry.
I have also re-read (well, actually re-listened to) book 1 to get
ready for 4. I am bothered every time I read/hear the part about Harry
and Hermione getting caught coming down from the Astronomy tower. I
understand Professor McGonagall's reaction and the other Gryffindors
(well except for Fred and George who have apparently lost lots of points
themselves). I don't understand Harry's, Hermione's, and especially
Hagrid's. Harry goes on about how ashamed he is and how he and Hermione
deserve their punishment. You'd think they had just been up there on a
lark or something. But they were protecting Hagrid. Not something they
should be ashamed about. And Hagrid never mentions feeling guilty about
getting them in trouble. Always strikes me as weird.
