I would have entered my two cents earlier on a lot of these if my ISP
hadn't suddenly gone into a coma that lasted the entire weekend. Anyway,
here's my "profile":

woman: yes, but I'm not old enough to be called that yet.
parent: yes, but not a factor. Virginia turned 15 months yesterday,
and although she's a genius (hehe), she can't read yet.
teacher: yes, also not a factor. When I finally discovered Harry Potter,
I was at my current job teaching for a welfare-to-work program at my
local community college. Not a lot of children's books readers in the
group I see every day.
writer: no, although I do have a small story on fanfiction.net (I'm not
telling you what my penname is because it's crap, I tell you!)
witch: nope.

I was introduced to Harry Potter like so many other adults out
there... the Rosie O'Donnell show. Until I heard the books mentioned
on her show, I hadn't even known they'd existed - and apparently, I'd
waited until the 4th or 5th time she'd talked about them to catch the
right show! Then, I was walking though my neighborhood Target and saw
CoS sitting on the shelf for $11. I said to myself, "Eleven dollars for
a HARDCOVER book??????? Sure!" and I bought it. I'm a big children's lit
fan, so I wasn't too worried that I wouldn't like it. Loved it so much
I finished it in a few hours, then ordered the other two (PoA had just
come out the day before! how's that for timing!) from Amazon.com, then
two weeks later, I went to Amazon.co.uk to order my British copies. :)

About Hagrid: I think when I first started reading him, I did a (poor)
Scottish accent - then I read somewhere that he was supposed to be
from Western England, and I stopped that. Of course, even though I'm a
linguist and a dialect-lover of all sorts, I can't do a Western English
dialect. Darn! I can do a wicked RP, my Austrailian is getting better all
the time, and you'd never know I wasn't from the South if you heard me
(I had a Southern (US) babysitter from the time I was 6 to when I was 9),
but I can't pick out the nuances of the "nonstandard" (I hate that word)
accents from the UK.

Anyway, sorry for the mishmash, here. I'm embarrassed to admit it,
but I'm very excited to get back online. I'd hate to think what would
happen if I couldn't have my computer for more than a weekend.

Jen
