Hi:
Having just wended my way through 3 separate freeway closures whilst
listening to PoA tapes (thank god!), I wanted to comment on this whole
pronounciation issue.
Jim Dale's version has *always* sounded to me like he's saying
Her-mon-knee (mon rhyming with Ron) or Her-ma-knee (as in Ma -- American
colloquial term for mother/mom/mum what have you).
I've been told by Voicelady that Jim Dale is just running the 2 middle
syllables together with a schwaa or something, but it still sounds like
Her-mon-knee to this southern ear.
It sounds like JKR uses the same pronounciation as Jim Dale from listening
to Nick's voice clip. This was surprising to me, since I'd read some
interview transcript with her where she'd said it should be pronounced
Her-my-oh-knee. And, maybe that's what she's doing but it sounds like
3 syllables if she's running the my-oh syllables together.
I will probably continue to just think & say Her-mon-knee as it's
easiest. <g>
