This is a collection of mysteries, inconsistencies, and other questions
about the first 3 HP books. It is being posted in 3 parts because it
is long.
How did the Marauder's map write the insults about Snape from Padfoot,
Prongs, etc., in other words is the map just "programmed" to write
insults, or is the map a bridge to the past in the same way as Riddle's
diary was?
Harry's glasses are taped up in the first book. In the second book they
seem to be whole, then get snapped in half when he falls down in Knockturn
Alley (while using the Floo Powder). How does this happen. [This has been
a topic of much discussion somewhere, I forget where exactly. Personally I
think that one of the Hogwarts professors repaired Harry's glasses when
he first got to Hogwarts, and it wasn't mentioned because, after all,
JKR can't mention EVERYTHING that happens to Harry. I mean, do we really
need to know every time he takes a shower or changes his socks?]
What's the difference between a wizard and a warlock?
Why does Snape tell Malfoy to make a snake appear during the duel (Book
2)? Does Snape have some idea that Harry is a parselmouth? And how does
Malfoy create the snake anyway? Doesn't creating an animal out of thin
air seem pretty hard, as compared with what the second years are learning
in their classes?
Dumbledore's card (from the Chocolate Frogs) says that one of his
accomplishments is the defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945. Is
Grindelwald supposed to be Hitler? Does that explain why the Allies
won World War II? [A sociology professor recently told me that no one
really understands why the Allies won the war. It seems to me that the
fact that 40 or 50 million Russians died fighting Hitler explains a lot
but according to this professor that is only one of a number of possible
reasons. I was tempted to tell him my theory about Dumbledore.]
How is Ron going to explain his new owl? [In the discussion group where
this question was introduced, the response I like the best is that he
can tell his parents that Hedwig had a baby.]
Where do kids from wizard families go to school before they are old
enough for Hogwarts? They have to learn to read and write somehow, but
if they went to regular schools wouldn't all the muggle kids learn more
than they should about witches and wizards?
Why does Harry's scar hurt from time to time?
