As to why Harry was left in the care of the Dursleys (much to McGonagall's
horror) Dumbledore expains it as "Famous before he can walk and talk!Can't
you see how much better off he'll be, growing up away from all that until
he's ready to take it?" But why he can't just hang with the Weasleys
during the summer holidays now, I don't know. Maybe his "suffering
through" the Dursley summers make him appreciate more the wizarding
world that is his birthright so that he doesn't take it for granted.
